In a passionate appeal to the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League, Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has called for a return to the humble and selfless leadership of John Langalibalele Dube, the former party president.
Mantashe made this compelling statement during a 79th commemoration of Dube’s life held in Inanda, Durban, this past Saturday.

Mantashe praised Dube as a leader who was always available to the people he served, emphasizing his accessibility and commitment to the community.
The ANC SG’s message was clear: today’s youth should aspire to embody the same values of humility, service, and wisdom that Dube championed throughout his life.

The Legacy of John Langalibalele Dube
John Langalibalele Dube’s legacy continues to resonate deeply within the ANC, as he is regarded as one of the foundational figures of the party.
Mantashe pointed out the various ways Dube has been remembered—as a pioneer, an educator, and an advocate for African rights. However, the Secretary-General pointed out that what truly defined Dube was his embodiment of indigenous leadership wisdom.
He emphasized that despite the many titles attributed to Dube, it was his deep understanding of leadership, rooted in the African community, that stood out the most. This wisdom, according to Mantashe, is what today’s leaders—particularly the youth—must strive to emulate.
