The African National Congress (ANC) is currently at a crossroads, as the party explores options for forming a national unity government.
This move comes amidst political manoeuvring and strategic considerations, with various parties vying for influence and control. The ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) has identified three potential scenarios, each with its own set of implications for the country’s future.
Political analyst Dr Oscar van Heerden from the University of Johannesburg suggests that the primary proposal on the table is a government of national unity.

Unlike previous iterations, this arrangement would likely involve a multiparty government, where party leaders agree on fundamental principles through a memorandum of understanding. This approach aims to foster collaboration and address key issues facing South Africa.
Reports indicate that the ANC has been in talks with the Democratic Alliance (DA), signalling a potential alliance. However, internal factions within the ANC are also engaging with Jacob Zuma’s Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.
Dr. van Heerden notes that while an ANC-EFF alliance could be challenging due to the EFF’s demands, it could be complemented by smaller parties like the Inkatha Freedom Party, Rise Mzansi, or the Patriotic Alliance to achieve a majority.
Such a coalition would provide a stable platform for governance.
Wayne Duvenage of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse raises concerns about an ANC-MK partnership, citing potential investor flight and economic instability. He underscores the importance of transparency and accountability, particularly if the ANC were to partner with the DA.
This alliance could invite scrutiny and demand reforms that some ANC members might resist. Duvenage also highlights the historical context, noting that the ANC must address past governance issues for any partnership to succeed.
The ANC’s decision will significantly impact South Africa’s political landscape. While a government of national unity appears to be the primary proposal, the party must carefully weigh the benefits and drawbacks of potential alliances.
As Dr. van Heerden suggests, the DA could provide stability, while the EFF presents both challenges and opportunities. Ultimately, the ANC’s choice will shape the country’s future, and the stakes have never been higher.
