ActionSA, led by Herman Mashaba, is boldly removing Al Jama-ah mayor Kabelo Gwamanda and the ANC-EFF coalition partners from power in Johannesburg. The critical juncture comes ahead of the upcoming elections on May 29.
The second round of the city’s budget vote is on the agenda, and Mashaba contends that Johannesburg residents have not been prioritized by the current government. The coalition, along with the Patriotic Alliance (PA), failed to support the budget proposed by MMC of finance Dada Morero this week.
ActionSA has garnered support from opposition coalition partners, including the PA, but they need the Democratic Alliance (DA) to vote alongside them.

However, DA federal chair Helen Zille remains sceptical about establishing a stable coalition government in Johannesburg. Zille advocates for dissolving the council and holding fresh elections to allow voters to consider the city’s recent history.
While Mashaba hopes for cooperation, the DA is reluctant to work with the PA due to past negative experiences. The PA, an independent party, denies being an arm of the ANC. The budget vote becomes crucial with the ANC 46 seats short of a majority in the 136-seat council.
As the election looms, the question remains: Should the budget pass, or will Johannesburg witness a reshuffling of council dynamics? A reconfigured provincial and national government could significantly impact local coalitions and partnerships.
