At the recent manifesto launch in Johannesburg, Funzi Ngobeni, the Gauteng Chairperson of Actionsa, emphasized the importance of the government working closely with communities to enhance the effectiveness of the police service in combating crime.

Ngobeni expressed concerns about the current state of the police service, stating that it has become unreliable and in need of improvement.

Ngobeni stressed the need for the police to be present at the grassroots level, working in collaboration with local communities, patrollers, and metro police.

He criticized the current practice of having centralized police units at the provincial level, referring to them as “amapanyaza,” and argued that they should be decentralized and integrated at the local level.

According to Ngobeni, this would enable a more efficient and proactive approach to addressing crime at its roots.

By advocating for police presence and collaboration at the local level, Ngobeni highlights the importance of community engagement in crime prevention. This approach aims to build trust between the police and the community, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for safety.

Ngobeni’s call for the government to prioritize grassroots policing reflects the need for a more decentralized and community-oriented approach to law enforcement.
