In recent days, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen sparked controversy with his remarks about amaPanyaza crime wardens. While campaigning in Soshanguve, Steenhuisen referred to these wardens as “drunkards” wearing uniforms purchased from PEP Stores.
This statement has been met with widespread criticism, with many viewing it as spiteful and potentially racist. Communications expert Sarah Britten has expressed concerns about the negative impact of Steenhuisen’s remarks on the DA’s image.
She argues that the party already struggles with likeability, and these comments only exacerbate that perception. Furthermore, the association of PEP Stores with black, low-income shoppers has led to accusations of racism.

It is worth noting that Britten suggests that if similar remarks had been made by EFF leader Julius Malema, they may not have received as much backlash. This highlights the sensitivity surrounding race and political discourse in South Africa.
Policy analyst Dr. Nkosikhulule Nyembezi and independent political analyst Sandile Swana both criticize Steenhuisen’s comments for setting a negative tone in political campaigning.
Nyembezi argues that while Steenhuisen may receive temporary praise and a boost in poll numbers, his remarks ultimately alienate potential coalition partners and fail to offer practical alternatives.
Swana raises questions about the selection and training of crime wardens, suggesting that Steenhuisen should provide evidence to support his claims.
The controversy surrounding Steenhuisen’s remarks is indicative of the scandalous nature of political campaigning in the lead-up to elections in South Africa. Swana points out that other political leaders, such as Gwede Mantashe, Fikile Mbalula, and Jacob Zuma, have also engaged in scandalous campaigning.
Within the MultiParty Charter, which consists of various opposition parties, Steenhuisen’s remarks have caused unease. ActionSA national chair Michael Beaumont criticizes the comments for failing to advance the image of the coalition.
