The trial of Thabo Bester, who escaped from the Mangaung correctional facility while serving a life sentence, is projected to run for at least 24 weeks. During his appearance in the Bloemfontein High Court, the State made this estimation known.
Bester’s lover and accomplice, Nandipha Magudumana, along with her father, Zolile Sekeleni, and six others accused of aiding in the escape, also appeared in court.
Originally scheduled for pre-trial proceedings, the Thabo Bester prison escape case was postponed due to changes in legal representation for some of the accused, including Bester himself.

The State now seeks disclosure from the defence regarding payment arrangements made by the accused, to assess their commitment to the case. However, the defence argues that it is premature to determine the financial implications without knowing the trial’s duration.
Prosecutor Amanda Bester has provided her projection, stating that based on the received 212B forms, it is unlikely that the trial can be completed in less than 24 weeks due to numerous disputes.
While the pre-trial hearing has been rescheduled for June, the State has assured the accused that copies of the dockets will be provided by 29th March to facilitate their preparation.
The Thabo Bester prison escape trial is anticipated to be a lengthy and complex legal process, with multiple parties involved. The State’s commitment to ensuring a fair and thorough trial is evident in its willingness to provide necessary documents to the defence.
As the proceedings unfold, it remains to be seen how the case will progress and what the outcome will be for Thabo Bester and his alleged accomplices.
