South Africa Not Completely Safe From Load Shedding Yet, Says Ramokgopa.

In a recent media briefing in Tshwane, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa provided an update on South Africa’s struggle with load shedding.

While the country has enjoyed 138 days without severe power cuts, Ramokgopa cautioned that the issue is not entirely resolved. Despite recent improvements, the Department of Electricity emphasized that South Africa is not completely safe from load shedding.

Ramokgopa attributed the recent respite from load shedding to significant improvements at Eskom. The power utility has seen a better energy availability factor and has extended the operational life of its Koeberg nuclear plant.

These advancements are crucial steps in the effort to stabilize South Africa’s energy supply. “These improvements affirm that work to rid the country of load shedding is gaining momentum,” Ramokgopa stated.

Despite these positive developments, Ramokgopa warned that substantial challenges still lie ahead. The minister underscored that declaring an end to load shedding would be premature.

“We need to caution against any declaration that load shedding is behind us,” he said. The outlook remains cautiously optimistic, with the department expecting the Medupi Unit 4 to contribute an additional 800 megawatts to the grid.

The Department of Electricity and Eskom continue to work toward a more stable and reliable energy supply, but a comprehensive solution has yet to be fully realized.
