Police in North West have launched a further investigation into an incident involving the confiscation of illicit cigarettes at the Botswana-South Africa border in Makgobistad, outside Mahikeng. The value of the confiscated illicit cigarettes is estimated at R8 million.
According to spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, the incident occurred when a truck loaded with illegal cigarettes was spotted by members of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF).
The truck appeared to be stationary due to a deflated tyre, which initially caught the attention of the SANDF members.

Upon approaching the vehicle, a male suspect got out of the truck, jumped the fence into Botswana, and fled on foot. Reports suggest that the SANDF members promptly alerted the local police, who then responded to the call.
The police have stated that further investigation into the R8 million illicit cigarette bust is currently underway. Authorities are working to gather more information about the origin of the illegal cigarettes and the identity of the suspect who fled the scene.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement at border areas, as they continue to combat illegal activities and ensure the safety and security of the region.
