Political parties across KwaZulu-Natal intensified efforts to encourage voter registration on Sunday as the country entered the final day of the Electoral Commission’s (IEC) last registration weekend before the 2026 local government elections.
The campaign push comes as the IEC prepares for the next phase of the electoral process, with the official election date expected to be announced once the registration weekend concludes.
IEC Voter Registration Deadline Nears Ahead Of Local Elections
The IEC says the conclusion of the final voter registration weekend will allow the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to officially proclaim the date for the 2026 local government elections.
Once the proclamation is published, the national voters’ roll will close at midnight on that day. After that deadline, voters will no longer be able to register or update their registration details ahead of the polls.

Political parties across KwaZulu-Natal have been campaigning throughout the province to encourage eligible citizens to register and participate in the upcoming elections.
Their efforts come amid growing concern over declining public interest in democratic processes. Several surveys and research reports have pointed to reduced voter participation and confidence in the country’s electoral system.

A recent Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) voter participation survey found that confidence in democracy has fallen to just six percent among respondents in KwaZulu-Natal.
The findings have added urgency to voter mobilisation efforts, with political leaders appealing to residents to exercise their democratic right by registering and casting their ballots in the November local government elections.
