The Western Cape Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC, Reagan Allen, has announced that the province’s Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers have successfully removed more than 500 illegal firearms from the streets over the past four years.
This achievement is a result of the provincial government’s commitment to enhancing safety in Cape Town.
Introduced in 2020, LEAP officers are strategically deployed to crime hotspots across the city. Since their inception, these officers have confiscated a total of 564 firearms and apprehended over 28,000 individuals for various offences.

This significant effort is crucial in combating the high rates of crime and reducing the incidence of shootings, which are the leading cause of murders in the province.
MEC Reagan Allen emphasized that LEAP’s primary focus is to enforce law and order, providing relief to residents who are burdened by the devastating reality of crime.
Additionally, LEAP serves as a force multiplier for the South African Police Service (SAPS), strengthening their efforts in the fight against crime.
The collaboration between LEAP and other law enforcement agencies in the City of Cape Town further enhances the effectiveness of these operations.
Removing illegal firearms from the streets is a significant step towards creating safer communities. The efforts of LEAP officers play a crucial role in restoring peace and security, ensuring that residents can live without fear and enjoy a better quality of life.
