A devastating incident has occurred at Mandlethu Primary School in Tsakane, East of Johannesburg, where a grade 1 learner tragically lost her life after allegedly consuming biscuits purchased from a local spaza shop.
The Gauteng Education Department has expressed its condolences to the family and is working closely with the authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
According to reports, the Grade 1 Learner started feeling unwell just before lunchtime on Tuesday. Concerned teachers immediately contacted the learner’s parents, who confirmed that she had indeed consumed snacks from a nearby store.

The situation quickly escalated, and emergency services were called to the scene. Tragically, despite their best efforts, the paramedics were unable to save the young girl’s life.
The Gauteng Education Department spokesperson, Zolani Mkhwemte, expressed deep sadness over the incident. He stated, “Unfortunately, the learner was certified dead by paramedics upon arrival.
Police are now conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.”
