City Power, Johannesburg’s primary electricity utility, has made significant strides in providing essential electricity access to informal settlements across the city.

Emphasizing reliable electricity’s crucial role in socio-economic development, the utility has expanded its efforts to electrify areas previously lacking this basic service. City Power is helping improve living conditions by increasing its focus on informal communities and empowering local residents.

Exceeding Expectations: More Than 2,000 Homes Electrified

Despite facing resource constraints, City Power has exceeded its initial goal of electrifying 2,500 households in the 2023/24 financial year. The utility has connected a total of 2,675 homes, surpassing its target by more than 170 households.

These connections span several key informal settlements, including Amarasta in Alexandra, Roodepoort, Slovo Park, Veggieland, Princess Plot, Matholesville, and Kliptown.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to explore alternative energy solutions to address growing demands and ensure long-term sustainability.

With a commitment to not just meeting current needs but also anticipating future growth, City Power is actively researching renewable energy options to complement its conventional power grid.

Mangena says the ultimate goal is to make electricity accessible, safe, and reliable for all Johannesburg residents, ensuring that even the most underserved communities benefit from modern energy services.

“In the 2023/24 financial year, City Power successfully electrified several informal settlements, including Amarasta in Alexandra, Roodepoort, Slovo Park, Veggieland, Princess Plot, Matholesville, and Kliptown.

“A total of 2 675 households were connected, well above the initial target of 2 500, as reflected in the Auditor-General’s report and our annual performance review report.

“We are continuing to make headway in electrifying more communities through conventional and alternative energy sources. Our mission to electrify informal settlements underscores our belief that everyone deserves access to safe and reliable energy,” Mangena said.
