Being a work-from-home mom is often misunderstood and underestimated. The assumption that it is an easy job can lead to frustration and misunderstandings within a household.
A recent post on Reddit’s r/amitheasshole (AITA) shed light on the struggles faced by a work-from-home mom and the impact it had on her relationship with her husband.
The Reddit user, clearcoffee7140, shared her experience of being a work-from-home mom and how her husband’s perception of her job changed after a significant incident. She explained that she and her husband have two young sons, aged five and seven.

While her husband works in an office, he has the option to work from home but chooses not to, citing distractions in the home environment.
The poster also revealed that she has her own business, which contributes to about a third of their household income. Her work is done from home and takes up approximately three hours of her day.
Her youngest son, who has high energy levels, stays at home with her throughout the day, while her older son comes home from school in the afternoon. The poster mentioned that both children are with her until her husband usually arrives home at around 8 pm or 9 pm.
In the Reddit post, the user shared an incident where tensions arose between her and her husband. One evening, she was tired and didn’t prepare dinner. When her husband came home, she suggested ordering food instead.
Both parties were already short-tempered, and a disagreement ensued. Her husband expressed the opinion that as a stay-at-home mother, she should take care of dinner since she is home all day.
The poster attempted to explain the difficulties of her day and the workload she manages, but her husband dismissed her concerns. In response, he offered to take care of the children while working from home to prove that her job was easy.
The poster gladly accepted the offer, hoping it would give her husband a better understanding of her responsibilities.
As the day unfolded, the husband faced the challenges of managing the children while juggling work responsibilities. He had to cancel a meeting to make breakfast and later had to mop the house after the boys got muddy.
The poster admitted that she did not offer any help during this time, hoping that her husband would realize the difficulties she faces.
During one of his meetings, the children got into a disruptive argument, and one of them entered their father’s room, causing a disturbance. The husband had to apologize to the meeting attendees for the interruption.
Afterward, he expressed his anger towards the poster, questioning why she didn’t assist him.
The Reddit post received various responses, with many empathizing with the poster’s situation. Commenters highlighted the importance of recognizing and appreciating the work of parenting and caregiving.
They also criticized the husband for not providing support and understanding to his wife, who essentially functions as a single mother, taking care of the children and managing the household.
Ultimately, the incident served as a lesson for the husband to acknowledge and respect the labour involved in parenting and caregiving.
