A shocking incident has unfolded in Limpopo, South Africa, as a 45-year-old teacher has been apprehended for allegedly plotting to kill his wife. The South African Police Service (Saps) confirmed the arrest, which took place in Polokwane on Saturday.
The police’s tracking team, along with the murder and robbery unit, received a tip-off about the teacher’s plans after he had supposedly hired someone to carry out the sinister act. The suspect was caught in the act after exchanging money, leading to his immediate arrest.
According to Hlulani Mashaba, the spokesperson for the Limpopo police, the suspect had already paid a portion of the agreed R15,000 to the hired individual, with R5,000 having already been transferred.

The police managed to intercept and apprehend the suspect right after the cash payment was made. The suspect, believed to be a teacher by profession, has been detained and will face charges of conspiracy to commit murder.
However, the motive behind the premeditated murder remains unknown at this stage. Mashaba mentioned that gender-based violence and femicide cannot be ruled out as possible factors.
The suspect is set to make his first appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 27 December.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of gender-based violence and the need for continued efforts to address this issue in society. It is crucial to create an environment where individuals feel safe and protected, especially within their own homes.
This unfortunate event brings to mind a similar case that occurred earlier this year, where the wife of a police officer was sentenced to 25 years in prison for her involvement in her husband’s killing.
Nelisiwe Cebisile Magwaza was given an additional three years for obstructing justice by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Mtunzini. The hired hitman, Bafana Biyela, received a life sentence for murder, along with 15 years each for robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The victim, Phiwayinkosi Magwaza, was a 59-year-old police officer at the time of his tragic death. He was shot and killed at his home in KwaMagwaza Reserve, Melmoth on August 27, 2020. The incident also involved the theft of his service firearm.
The Hawks, a specialized unit of the South African Police Service, subsequently arrested Nelisiwe Cebisile Magwaza on September 10, 2020. Bafana Biyela was apprehended a week later at the KwaMashu hostel, where he was found in possession of the officer’s service pistol.
These cases highlight the importance of swift and thorough investigations in cases of violence and the need for justice to be served. Law enforcement agencies need to work diligently in resolving such crimes and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Additionally, society as a whole must continue to address the underlying causes of gender-based violence and femicide, fostering a culture of respect and equality.
As the suspect awaits his court appearance, it is hoped that this incident will serve as a wake-up call, prompting further action to prevent such acts of violence and protect potential victims.
The focus must remain on creating a society where individuals can live without fear, free from the threat of harm within their own homes and communities.
