The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has taken to the streets, picketing outside the South African Steel Mills in Meyerton, Vaal. The reason? More than 160 workers have been unfairly dismissed for participating in a protected strike.
In April, workers at the steel mill initiated an indefinite strike after the company refused to recognize their representatives as full-time shop stewards.
The dispute centres around several critical issues, including the minimum wage as stipulated by the MIDC (Metal Industry Development Centre) and occupational health and safety concerns.

Numsa’s Regional Secretary, Kabelo Ramokhathali, expressed his concern: “The main issue is that the company after the employees embarked on a protected strike, dismissed more than 162 workers.” The union contends that these dismissals infringe upon workers’ constitutional right to strike.
Today, Numsa members gather outside the company’s offices, demanding justice for their unfairly dismissed colleagues. The picket serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of workers’ rights and fair treatment within the labour force.
