Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says the conflicts in Mozambique have had no negative impact on South African port operations.
Tensions in that country reached a climax last week when protestors took to the streets of Maputo to question the legality of last month’s elections and call for an overhaul of the results.
The violence grew, attracting a lot of Mozambiquans to the street, which resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people.
The South African side of the border saw the need to close the root to avoid unregulated movement into the country but was later opened.

According to Creecy, the transfer of commodities between South Africa and Mozambique has gone relatively smoothly.

She stated that since the border post opened on Saturday, they have cleared the backlog.
She said, “I think there were 25km of trucks waiting, and those trucks were cleared. So, I think because the closure was relatively short-term, we haven’t seen any diversion to our ports.
“My understanding is that normal processes are now operating at that border post,” Creecy added.
