A well-known businessman who owns several private security companies has been arrested alongside two senior police officers as part of an investigation into corruption and the illegal trade in precious minerals.

Sources have confirmed that the civilian suspect was detained in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday. His arrest came after a third suspect was apprehended earlier on the same day at an apartment in Houghton, Johannesburg.

The two senior officers are understood to be attached to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, and the Crime Intelligence.

Earlier on Saturday, law enforcement officials travelling in unmarked vehicles searched the residence of one of the senior officers.

Police said the arrests are linked to allegations of corruption and the unlawful trade of precious minerals.

“The arrests were effected over the weekend by the team who executed a J50 warrant of arrest,” the spokesperson said.

Sources familiar with the matter have alleged that the businessman previously had business dealings with one of the senior police officers who is now in custody.
