On Tuesday morning, a bus carrying commuters from Katlehong to Kempton Park crashed on the northbound lane of the R21 highway, just near OR Tambo International Airport.

Bus Declared Roadworthy After Safety Test

The MMC for Roads and Transport in the City of Ekurhuleni, Andile Mngwevu, confirmed that the bus involved in the deadly crash had passed a safety inspection just a month earlier, in February.

This critical detail reassures the public that the vehicle was deemed fit for road use prior to the incident, eliminating mechanical failure as a potential cause.

Driver’s Attempt to Avoid Collision Likely Led to Overturn

According to Mngwevu, the bus, which was a part of the Ekurhuleni metro fleet, was travelling along its regular route from Katlehong to Kempton Park. The crash appears to have been triggered by a smaller vehicle, which allegedly disrupted the driver’s focus.
