The uMngeni Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has welcomed the arrest of a fifth suspect in connection with the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu. The 44-year-old suspect was arrested in Mpophomeni on Saturday by the Political Killings Task Team. Ndlovu was shot and killed at his home in 2023 while his wife and children were present.
Police have identified Chief Simphiwe Zuma of Nxamalala in Impendle as the alleged mastermind behind the killing. Zuma remains in custody after being denied bail twice, while two other accused have already pleaded guilty. The latest arrest brings the number of suspects arrested in connection with the case to five.
Nhlalayenza Ndlovu Murder: Fifth Suspect Arrested
The Political Killings Task Team carried out the latest arrest in Mpophomeni as investigators continue pursuing those allegedly involved in Ndlovu’s killing. The councillor was murdered at his home in 2023. His wife and children were reportedly at the property when the shooting occurred.
The arrest has been welcomed by the uMngeni Municipality, which said developments that move the case closer to a conclusion are welcomed. Mayor Chris Pappas said the municipality remained concerned about the level of cooperation between police and Ndlovu’s family. He said the municipality would continue monitoring the matter with its lawyers.

Pappas said the municipality welcomed arrests that could bring the case closer to justice. “Of course, when there are new developments in this case that lead to arrests and us getting closer to justice, we are pleased by this.

“We are still concerned that the police are not being completely transparent and they are not completely cooperative with the family, however we do hope and we do pray that we are getting close to the finalization of this case.”
He said the municipality wanted the matter brought to a conclusion as soon as possible. “Justice must be served we cannot tolerate political killings and our councilors being murdered, and we do hope that this comes to a quick finalisation,” says the municipal mayor Chris Pappas. The municipality said it would continue following developments in the case.
Pappas said the municipality would continue working alongside its legal representatives to follow the proceedings.

He said the aim was to ensure accountability and justice for Ndlovu’s family. The latest arrest comes as Zuma remains behind bars after two unsuccessful bail applications.
Two other accused in the case have already pleaded guilty. The 44-year-old suspect is now expected to face the legal process as the investigation and prosecution continue. The municipality said it would remain engaged with the case until its conclusion.
