A police officer was wounded after members deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi came under fire from suspected illegal miners in Barberton, Mpumalanga.
The shooting happened on Wednesday night, 12 August 2026, during an operation targeting illegal mining activities. The injured officer was airlifted to hospital for treatment.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said officers were conducting operations when they encountered a group of armed suspected illegal miners. He said officers also saw a Toyota Avanza arriving at the scene before shots were allegedly fired from the direction of the suspects.

“Members deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi were on duty conducting operations aimed at combating illegal mining activities in the area when they encountered a group of armed suspected illegal miners.
“Upon approaching the suspects, the members observed a Toyota Avanza that arrived at the scene. It is alleged that shots were fired from the direction of the illegal miners. The police members took cover and returned fire,” Mdhluli said.

One police member sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire and was airlifted to hospital. The driver of the Toyota Avanza, a 36-year-old man, was taken in for questioning as police investigate the incident.

Mdhluli said police operations and visibility had been increased in and around Barberton following the shooting. “Illegal mining remains a serious concern as it is often linked to the proliferation of firearms and other criminal activities.”

Mpumalanga provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise said police would continue efforts to track down those involved in illegal mining. The investigation into the shooting is continuing.
