The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng is mourning the death of senior party member Mzikayifane Elias Khumalo, widely known as Mzi.

Khumalo died in hospital after being rushed there for emergency medical treatment when he collapsed at his home in the early hours of Monday morning.

He had been a member of the Gauteng Legislature since 2019 and also served as an ANC Gauteng spokesperson.

The provincial ANC has extended its condolences to Khumalo’s family, friends and fellow comrades, saying his revolutionary spirit and dedication to serving the people would live on.

Mzi Khumalo Remembered After Sudden Passing

The news of Khumalo’s death has come as a shock to some of those who knew him closely, with friends describing his passing as sudden.

At the time of his death, Khumalo had recently completed a Master of Laws qualification and was preparing to start his legal practice.

Gauteng Education MEC and prominent ANC provincial member Lebogang Maile said he was devastated by Khumalo’s death.

Maile recalled their longstanding relationship, which began during their involvement in the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and the ANC Youth League.

“We have fought a lot of battles together and shared trenches as well. We have known each other from our days at COSAS and the ANC Youth League. We have worked together in several structures including in government.”

Lebogang Maile Pays Tribute To ANC Comrade

Maile said Khumalo had much more to contribute to the country and the ANC, adding that his absence would be felt by those who worked alongside him.

“We will miss him because he had a lot to contribute in building our country and in also helping us to renew the ANC. So, his wisdom, commitment and loyalty will be sorely missed by us who worked with him.”

The ANC said Khumalo’s contribution to the organisation and the people of Gauteng would be remembered as the party mourns his death.
