The defence is expected to continue cross-examining the State’s first witness in the attempted murder trial of alleged crime figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his four co-accused in the Johannesburg High Court.
The case centres on an alleged shooting at the Centurion Golf Estate in August 2022, which left several people targeted in what prosecutors describe as an attempted murder.
Cat Matlala Trial Hears Evidence From Security Guard
The State’s first witness, Bethwell Mzamo Cele, a security guard who was on duty at the estate on the night of the incident, testified before the court on Tuesday.
Matlala, his wife Tsakane Matlala, Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela and Nthabiseng Nzama face a combined 25 charges.
The charges relate to the alleged attempted murders of Madoda Joe Sibanyoni, actress Tebogo Thobejane and Seunky Mokubung, who is widely known as DJ Vettys.

Cele told the court that a red Ferrari arrived at the Centurion Golf Estate on the evening of 10 August 2022, followed by a Volkswagen Golf 7.
He testified that a white BMW later drove slowly past the entrance before making a U-turn.

According to Cele, the BMW was carrying three occupants who were allegedly armed with AK-47 assault rifles. He said the vehicle stopped behind the Ferrari and the Golf 7 before two occupants got out and repeatedly fired at the Golf 7, smashing its windows with gunfire.

The State also attempted to introduce video footage that it said captured the shooting.

However, the Johannesburg High Court refused the application after ruling that the footage had not yet been properly authenticated.
The prosecution maintains that Cele’s testimony, together with the video evidence it hopes to rely on, is crucial to placing the first and second accused at the scene of the alleged shooting as the trial continues.
