The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that it is working to resolve tensions between Crime Intelligence and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) by ordering an independent review of related cases.

The move follows a dispute over warrants issued for senior Crime Intelligence officials, including unit head Dumisani Khumalo.

The disagreement centres on arrest warrants obtained for several senior Crime Intelligence officers.

Khumalo’s planned arrest was reportedly halted shortly before it was due to take place because he was involved in security planning operations on 30 June.

The NPA has now decided that all IDAC matters involving Crime Intelligence will be reviewed by external parties before any final decisions are taken.

“Yes, they can’t be, and as you might know, he mentioned even at the press conference that, the warrants are valid until they are cancelled by whoever has signed them, the magistrate that signed them, or the equivalent, but they will be stayed until this process is done because he has got to make sure that he understands what happened, convinces himself that all the processes were followed properly.”

The review is intended to determine whether all legal procedures were correctly followed before the warrants were issued.

For now, the arrest warrant for Khumalo will remain on hold pending the completion of the independent review process.
