Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena escaped unharmed after his vehicle was involved in a crash in Vanderbijlpark on Sunday.

The accident reportedly happened near the intersection around Hertz Boulevard, opposite Emfuleni Estate. According to residents, Mokoena allegedly lost control of his vehicle while approaching a roundabout before it struck a wall at Trevasa Court.

Mokoena told The Sedibeng Ster, a regional publication of The Citizen, that he had returned to the area on Saturday after spending the week working with South African Football Association (SAFA) development structures.

He had been attending the SAFA and FIFA Talent Development Scheme U15 Inter-Provincial Tournament at Marks Park in Johannesburg.

The circumstances surrounding the crash have not been independently established in the supplied material.

Claims About Alcohol Use Surface

Following the collision, claims circulated suggesting that Mokoena may have been under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred.

No evidence establishing the allegation has been provided in the supplied material, and Mokoena had not responded to the claims at the time of publication.

The allegation should therefore not be treated as an established fact.

Crash Involving Former Sekhukhune United Player

The incident comes amid attention on a separate case involving former Sekhukhune United footballer Mokete “Shaune” Mogaila.

Earlier this week, Mogaila was convicted of culpable homicide and failing to render assistance after pleading guilty in connection with a crash that killed nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela.

Mogaila appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate's Court and entered a guilty plea in terms of Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The charges relate to a collision on Andrew Mapheto Road in the early hours of 30 October 2024.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mogaila admitted that the vehicle he was driving crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a vehicle carrying Keo Mavimbela and two children.

Gomolemo died in the collision, while her mother and 13-year-old Thando Khethiwa sustained serious injuries.

Mogaila Sentencing Set For November

The NPA said Mogaila left the scene after the collision but later handed himself over to police. Investigators reportedly found alcohol bottles and drugs in his vehicle.

Mogaila was convicted on the charges, with the NPA welcoming the outcome as a step towards justice for the affected families.

The matter was postponed to 17 November 2026 for sentencing.

The two incidents are separate matters, and there is no indication in the supplied information that the circumstances surrounding Mokoena's crash are connected to the criminal case involving Mogaila.
