Durban authorities have stepped up preparations for the 2026 MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, with a coordinated security operation planned to manage supporters, traffic and public safety across the city.

The match is scheduled for Saturday, 10 October, at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with kick-off at 6pm. Stadium gates will open at 2pm.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) is coordinating the operation alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), Durban Metro Police, the Road Traffic Inspectorate and other security stakeholders, including private security providers.

The preparations follow reports of sporadic violent protests in Durban’s central business district on Thursday afternoon. PROVJOINTS has assured supporters that Durban and surrounding areas remain safe, while police plan to maintain an increased presence to deter criminal activity and protect the public.

Authorities have also warned against misleading social media posts concerning the staging of the final, saying unverified information could cause unnecessary confusion and panic.

The event safety planning structures and police management have assured the Premier Soccer League that security arrangements remain in place for the match.

Road Closures And Parking Arrangements Announced

EThekwini Municipality has confirmed that Isaiah Ntshangase Road will close from midday on Saturday. The road will reopen after the match once authorities determine that conditions are safe for motorists and pedestrians.

Traffic marshals, additional signage and traffic management measures will be deployed around the stadium precinct to help manage the expected increase in vehicles and pedestrian movement.

Motorists who are not attending the final have been advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Designated parking will be available at Mastering Field, Suncoast Casino and specified on-street parking areas along Umgeni Road. A designated drop-off zone will also operate on Umgeni Road.

Drivers have been urged to use the drop-off facility responsibly and avoid obstructing traffic.

Authorities are encouraging supporters to arrive early to reduce congestion and allow sufficient time to enter the stadium. Access to Moses Mabhida Stadium will be restricted to valid ticket holders, and people without tickets have been advised not to travel to the stadium precinct.

Stadium Security Rules And Prohibited Items

The security operation will cover crowd management, public order and the protection of spectators, players, officials and other event participants before, during and after the match.

Spectators will be prohibited from bringing firearms, knives and bottles into the stadium. Unauthorised drones will also be prohibited, as Moses Mabhida Stadium and its surrounding vicinity have been designated a no-fly zone.

Supporters must comply with instructions from law enforcement officers and event safety personnel. Authorities have warned that anyone who breaches security protocols or endangers others may face legal consequences.

Durban Metro Police will work alongside SAPS and other security stakeholders to safeguard football fans, residents and visitors throughout the event.

The operation comes as the city prepares to accommodate supporters of two of South African football’s leading clubs. Officials have called on attendees to follow safety instructions and cooperate with law enforcement to help ensure the final proceeds without disruption.

Free Public Viewing Planned At South Beach

Supporters who do not have match tickets will be able to watch the final at an official public viewing area at Bay of Plenty on OR Tambo Parade in Durban’s South Beach.

The viewing area will offer live entertainment from midday, giving fans an alternative venue to experience the match-day atmosphere without entering the stadium.

The arrangement also provides an option for supporters who wish to watch the match without travelling to the stadium precinct.

EThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele said hosting the final presented an opportunity to promote tourism and support local businesses.

“Hosting the MTN8 Final is a proud moment for Durban and a significant boost for our local economy. Events of this scale drive tourism, support local businesses and affirm our city’s standing as a world-class events destination,” Mbhele said.

The municipality has urged supporters, motorists and other attendees to plan their journeys in advance and follow directions from event organisers and law enforcement officers.

Security measures will remain in place before, during and after Saturday’s final as Durban prepares to host the tournament’s concluding match.
